How 500 Children Got Their First School Books

When we launched our books distribution drive at the beginning of 2026, we set an ambitious goal: put brand-new school books into the hands of 500 children who had never owned a single textbook. Today, I'm proud to say we not only met that goal — we exceeded it.

The Challenge We Faced

In many rural parts of India, education is a luxury that families simply cannot afford. Children walk to school every day without notebooks, without pencils, and without the textbooks they need to learn. The government provides free tuition, but the cost of books and supplies falls on families who often earn less than ₹200 a day.

We identified 12 villages across three states — Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha — where the school dropout rate was among the highest in the country. In these villages, nearly 40% of children dropped out before completing primary school, largely because their families couldn't afford basic school supplies.

The moment a child holds a book for the first time, you can see the spark in their eyes. That spark is what drives us to do this work every single day.

Our Approach

We didn't just distribute books and walk away. Our approach was holistic and community-driven. Here's what we did:

Needs Assessment: We partnered with local teachers and village leaders to identify children who needed books the most.
Custom Book Kits: Each child received a kit containing textbooks, notebooks, pencils, erasers, a sharpener, a school bag, and a water bottle.
Teacher Training: We trained 60 teachers across 12 schools on how to use the new materials effectively in their classrooms.
Parent Engagement: We held community meetings to explain the importance of keeping children in school, addressing cultural barriers and economic concerns.
Follow-up Monitoring: Our team visits each school quarterly to track attendance, academic performance, and material usage.

Stories That Moved Us

The most rewarding part of this initiative was meeting the children and hearing their stories. Here are a few that stayed with us:

Anita, age 9, Bihar: Anita had been sharing a single torn notebook with her two siblings. When she received her own set of five pristine notebooks, she hugged them to her chest and said, "Now I can write as much as I want." Today, she writes poetry in her free time and dreams of becoming a teacher.

Ravi, age 11, Jharkhand: Ravi had never seen a picture book before receiving one from us. He spent the entire evening looking at the illustrations, asking his mother to read the captions to him. Within three months, he learned to read on his own. His teacher says he's now the best reader in his class.

Lakshmi, age 7, Odisha: Lakshmi's father works as a daily-wage laborer. He had pulled her out of school to help with household work. After our team visited the family and provided books and a uniform, Lakshmi returned to school. She hasn't missed a single day since.

What's Next

This is just the beginning. In 2027, we're scaling our books distribution program to reach 2,000 children across 8 states. We're also launching a digital library initiative that will give children access to thousands of e-books on tablets provided by our corporate partners.

We can't do this alone. Every ₹500 donation provides a complete book kit for one child for an entire year. That's less than the cost of a dinner out, but for a child like Anita or Ravi, it's the key to a completely different future.
